Exhibition "ALMATY through the Ages", dedicated to the 1000th anniversary of the city of Almaty

On 5 August 2016, the Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Municipality of Almaty held an opening of the exhibition "ALMATY through the Ages", dedicated to the 1000th anniversary of the city of Almaty, as part of the annual "Night at the Museum" celebration around the world. The 1000th anniversary of the city and region of Almaty entered the calendar of memorable dates of UNESCO and has a special place in the history of Kazakhstan. The main goal of the exhibition was to demonstrate the history of Almaty from the antiquity to the present, as one of the oldest and largest cities in the country and as an administrative state, craft and trade center with historical and cultural value.

The instrumental music of an ethnographic ensemble accompanied the opening of the exhibition. The Mayor of Almaty B.K. Baibek, academician K. Baipakov and Deputy Director of the Central State Museum B.S. Kakabaev gave welcome speeches related to the history of the museum and the city of Almaty. UNESCO Almaty Staff participated in the opening of the exhibition.

In 2006, the Central State Museum became a member of the international project “Night in the Museum”, supported by UNESCO and the International Council of Museums.

“Night in the Museum” event has become an attractive and expected event in the cultural life of Almaty over the past ten years. Since 1997, UNESCO Almaty has been supporting the Central State Museum under the HeritageNet project for Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for museums, a telecommunications network on historical, cultural and natural heritage of the Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan).

Over the years, UNESCO has also developed the Museolog Open source software for digital catalogue management of the museum community in Central Asia and Museum Studies Training Package, including four volumes related to security at museums, care and handling of manuscripts, documentation of artifact’s collections and risk management in museums.
