The event was organized by UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office jointly with the Public Fund "Center "Cooperation for sustainable development" (CSD Center), in partnership with German-Kazakh University. In 2007 the Center "Cooperation for sustainable development" (CSD center), with the support of UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office, has developed an IWRM study course. In 2011 the course was updated for the first time. To date the IWRM course is introduced and being successfully taught at five universities of Kazakhstan; moreover, a number of other universities throughout Kazakhstan, as well as Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan use the course materials in their educational activities.

Due to significant changes in water resources management over 2011-2015, a need to revise the training programmes for specialists in water resources and other related fields has emerged. With the support of UNESCO Almaty Office, CSD center has successfully prepared an updated IWRM course, based on the latest materials.

During the training an updated IWRM course with improved presentations, new case studies and practical tasks was presented to the participants. The participants were able to discuss changes in water resources management that took place in recent years, as well as to exchange experience of teaching of water related study programmes at their universities. The event was aimed at improving the quality of education and training of specialists in the field of water resources.

The training was attended by representatives of the Committee for water resources of the Ministry of agriculture, Republic of Kazakhstan, the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, universities of Central Asian countries, international and non-governmental organizations and experts on water resources management.
